Malawi: Can We Move Forward Without Stepping Back?

I'm perplexed by our haste to move forward as nation without examining what has preceded us especially when what has preceded us sets the foundation for our future as a nation. We cannot move on into whatever future we hope for as a nation without looking into our past and evaluating, as painfully excruciating as that process may be, what happened in the history of our nation. More so as we approach our 50th anniversary in 4 years' time, we need to take a look back. As has been said, the unexamined life is not worth living. The unfortunate thing though, as has been said by wiser men, "in Malawi, those that know don't talk and those talk don't know." However, now more than ever, we need those that know to talk lest we be left to the devices of those that twist history, and with it a sober appraisal of our past. We need to exorcise the ghosts of tribalism/regionalism/racism. We need to see the effects of "big-man politics" on the development of the nation. We need to know the facts as to who was a "rebel" and "hero" without the usual propaganda and hagiographies. Most of all, we need to move forward on a truthful foundation that goes beyond individual vindictiveness to issues of societal health so that we can, together as a nation, fulfill our destiny in the next 50 years. If we don't do such stock-taking as a nation, we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. As has been said: if the mule kicks the first time, it's his fault; if it kicks you the second time, it's your fault. May we not die the death of a fool as a nation.
